African Elephants are the largest land animals on Earth today, weighing between 2 and 7 tons. They are distinguished from Indian Elephants by their larger ears, greater size, and the fingerlike feature at the end of their trunks.

History: The first known proboscidean appeared in Africa around 60 million years ago, just a blink of the eye after dinosaurs went extinct. It stood only 3 feet tall at the shoulders and had a short trunk. The best known descendants are the giants Wooly Mammoth and Mastodon, beasts of the ice age. From the same family tree came the Indian and African Elephants, although interaction with humans and millions of years of shifting climates have reduced their ranges back to the Indian subcontinent and Africa south of the Sahara.
